Citrus-damaging insect found audio actuality available

Nine Asian citrus psyllids have been found in traps in San Diego County, 11 miles north of the border. They've been located in citrus trees in residential areas, all within a 600-meter radius. The insect can carry citrus greening bacteria; however, it is not known if these insects carry it. Thus far the insects found in Mexico just across the border from San Diego have not been disease carriers. Citrus greening disease has caused major damage to Florida's citrus trees.

The eyes have it: Antioxidants help vision

Researchers say that a diet with plenty of antioxidant-rich foods such as artichokes and blueberries can help protect against macular degeneration. The disease is the leading cause of age-related blindness in the United States. Scientists with Brigham Young and Cornell universities conducted the study, which was published online in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. California produces virtually all of the nation's artichokes and is fifth in blueberry production.

It's planting time for winter vegetables

Imperial Valley farmers are preparing their fields to plant the winter vegetable crop. Lettuce, carrots and other winter vegetables will be ready to market in December. The November vegetables have already been planted in the Huron area of Fresno County. Planted acreage is much lower than last year because there is not enough water available. Consumers may notice higher prices for lettuce and other vegetables in November when supplies are reduced.

Milk helps exercise recovery

While water and sports drinks are often the beverages of choice following a workout, researchers are suggesting a different drink: milk. According to a study, consuming milk can aid muscle recuperation after exercise. Previous research has shown that milk helps with rehydration, but this is the first study to suggest that drinking milk after exercise may decrease muscle damage. California is the nation's top milk-producing state.
