Speed limit signs aid in controlling dust

Haste makes dust on unpaved rural roads, but farmers and ranchers can reduce dust by posting speed limits on private roads.

To help, the California Farm Bureau Federation makes available speed limit signs to be posted along unpaved roads. The bright yellow, hard plastic signs measure 12 inches by 18 inches. They feature a large "No Dust" symbol and the wording, "Drive Slowly; Dust Injures Crops; Speed Limit 5 M.P.H."

CFBF sells the signs at cost, $1.73 each plus shipping.

The signs may be of particular interest to farmers in the eight San Joaquin Valley counties, who must undertake conservation management practices under new air-quality rules. The posting of speed-control signs on unpaved roads has been identified as an accepted conservation management practice.

To order signs or to obtain further information, please call the California Farm Bureau's toll-free Member Help Line, (800) 698-FARM (3276) or the CFBF Leadership Development Division, (916) 561-5590.
