Farm Bureau delegates approve policies
California Farm Bureau approved changes to the organization’s policies last week during a House of Delegates session at the organization’s 106th Annual Meeting in Monterey. “We are proud of the history of advocating for you, the farmers and ranchers, and that legacy is the foundation upon which we build,” California Farm Bureau Chief Operating Officer Dan Durheim said during the session.

Increased almond shipments signal better times ahead
Despite economic challenges for those in the almond business, the Almond Board of California painted an optimistic outlook for the industry, emphasizing the organization’s ongoing efforts to build demand for the nut by easing trade barriers and making new strides in marketing, innovation and research.

An insatiable curiosity
With chef Michael Hung, the conversational topics run the gamut: literature, ocean sustainability, investment strategies, surfing, mental health, animated movies and, oh yeah, food. Hung acknowledges an insatiable curiosity. “My brain is always working, so if I don’t feed it something, then it will move in the wrong direction,” he says with a laugh. Hung holds a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature and a master of fine arts in fiction writing. He has worked in the kitchens of some of the nation’s top restaurants and even served as menu chef and consultant on the Academy Award-winning film “Ratatouille.”

The art of hoshigaki
Marilyn Feller was amazed by the sweet burst of flavor the first time she tasted hoshigaki, traditional Japanese dried persimmons. “It’s been a love affair ever since,” she says. For years, she’d been regularly purchasing fresh produce from a farmstand at Otow Orchard in Placer County. But she’d never tried its hoshigaki until about 12 years ago when the farm’s owners, Tosh and Chris Kuratomi, suggested she sample some.
