Whole Milk Bill Passes Senate Ag
The Senate Committee on Agriculture unanimously passed the bipartisan Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act (S.222), a bill that would permit schools to offer whole and reduced milk as part of the National School Lunch Program. Back in 2012, those options were removed in favor of skim and low-fat milk due to concerns about higher saturated fats and calories. This legislation will still give schools the option to carry those as well as nondairy substitutes if they meet similar nutritional standards. A companion bill in the House is similarly moving along the committee process. Click here for more information from Sen. Richard Marshall (R-KS), who is the primary sponsor in the Senate.
