President Delays New Canadian Tariffs, Potential Agreement Upcoming

Published Friday, August 21, 2026
On Aug. 19, President Donald Trump announced a three-day delay in planned tariffs on Canada that were set to take effect later that day. Reports indicate that ongoing provincial bans on U.S. liquor and wine are among the issues being discussed as part of negotiations.
Several Canadian provinces have restricted sales of U.S. alcohol for more than a year in response to trade tensions with the United States. Canada has historically been the largest export market for California wine, but sales have fallen sharply during the past year amid the ongoing disputes. It remains unclear whether the tariff delay will be extended if negotiations continue. California Farm Bureau will keep members updated as developments unfold.
