Farm Bill Markup Being Considered Next Week

Next week, the Senate Agriculture Committee is considering holding a markup of the farm bill. This means the committee will review amendments and eventually take up a full vote on the bill. It remains to be seen if Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, who works on the committee, will attend due to ongoing questions about his health. Republicans have only a one-vote majority on the committee, so his absence would result in the bill failing if it voted along party lines. If he remains absent, this suggests that Republicans could be prepared to offer concessions to Democrats to push for a bipartisan vote. The biggest target for Democrats has been an extension in payments by states built around Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program error and fraud rates based on last year’s passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. While a Democratic priority, several Republican-led states would also stand to benefit by a delay.
