Senate Agriculture Committee Expected to Revisit Farm Bill Next Week

The Senate Agriculture Committee is preparing to resume its markup of the Farm, Food and National Security Act of 2026, or the farm bill, next week, with indications that Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell will return to break a potential tie. His prolonged absence has prevented Republicans from passing the bill along party lines in committee.
There is still the possibility that a negotiated deal could bring more Democrats on board as well, but it remains unclear whether such an agreement has taken place. Democrats remain consistent in arguing for a two-year extension of a cost-share provision for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program payments that is set to go into effect next year. Those efforts stem from changes made by Republicans through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in 2025. Even if passed out of committee, lawmakers will need a 60-vote margin to get it out of the Senate. The bill would then likely head to a conference committee for further consideration and passage before being sent to the president’s desk.
